Basic information about planters

If you want to use just a normal planter you need to know some basic information about planters. All planters need a good drainage. A drainage system that is not functioning properly will result in root rot and we all know that root rot is a big danger for plants. That’s why normal planters have drainage holes in the bottom of the planter. You need to water your plants more frequently when you are using a planter because of the fact that the soil dries out much faster than it does on the ground.

When we are talking about watering containers we mean all the planters and pots which can be used for watering.

What is a pot?

A pot is normally a rounded shape and usually made from earthenware material, iron or metal and does not have any holes in the bottom. Pots are mainly used for decoration en could crack if they are used in bad outdoor conditions.

What are planters?

A planter is a large container, has a rectangular shape and is made of all kinds of different materials like clay stone, terra cotta, plastic, wood and fiberglass with holes in the bottom for drainage. Planters are used to grow trees, flowers or plants. You can use planters anywhere that you cannot grow plants in the ground like a balcony or, a patio or beneath your window.
Both pots and planters can, when they are made from earthenware material, be glazed and unglazed.
Planters are designed and mostly used to withstand outdoor conditions like high or low temperatures, humidity and wind.
Keep in mind that hanging baskets are considered planters.
Plastic planters can be used for both in home as outdoors. Some of the plastic designs just look like the more expensive materials such as stone, terra cotta or granite.
